Undas sa Makabagong Panahon
Sinulat ni Christy Sygaco
Sa pagdaan ng panahon at sa araw-araw na ginawa ng Diyos para sa tao ay hindi maiiwasan ang pagbabago. Ngunit kadalasan, imbes na mapabuti pa ang naturang kaugalian ay nagiging mitsa ito upang yurakan an gating pagkatao kabilang na rito ang pagbabagong naganap patungkol sa undas.
Ang undas ay ginaganap tuwing ika-2 ng Nobyembre ngunit dito sa Pilipinas ito’y ipinagdiriwang tuwing a-uno. Kaya nang dumalaw kami sa sementeryo, nagulat ako’t napatulala sa mga pinanggagawa ng mga tao may iba doon na nahulihan ng patalim, sa higpit ba naman ng mga pulis natin ngunit sa kabila nun ay may nakapuslit pa ring mga alak, radio at baraha. Ang pinagtataka ko lang, bakit nila ginagawa ito? Kailangan ba talaga? Hindi naman diba? Ang mahalaga ay ang panalangin para sa mga kaluluwa ng mga namayapa nating mahal sa buhay. Na kung saan, iilan lamang ang nag-aalay. Siguro nga dahil sa mga pangyayari sa sementeryo ay nagmamadali nalang umuwi ang mga tao. Karamihan na nga sa mga Pinoy ngayon, hindi pa nga ipinagdiriwang ang undas ay dumadalaw na sa sementeryo at inilalaan na lamang nila ang araw na iyon sa paghahanda ng mga alay. Ang sasarap nga ng mga handa, gusto ko na agad laklakin ngunit sabi ni Inay dapat raw munang hintayin na matapos ang pag-aalay bago ako kumain. Kasi hindi raw maganda kung tira-tira na lamang ang ipakakain mo sa mga kaluluwa. Naniniwala kasi kami na dumadalaw sila at kumakain ng handa sa panahong iyon. Sari-saring handa ang meron, may suman, bola-bola, mga prutas, alak, kanin at kung anu-ano pang handa ang nasa mesa. At gaya nang nakalakhan ko, tuwing ika-2 ng nobyembre nagkayayaan ang mga tao na maligo sa dagat, wala namang problema sa baon kasi may kanya-kanyang tira galing pa sa pagdiriwang. Ngunit kakaiba ang nangyari ngayon imbes na magkatuwaan ay nagkagirian ba naman ang mga ito at isang alitan ang nabuo. Ang isang kasiyahan na dapat sana’y pagmulan ng mabuting samahan ay nauwi sa panghabang-buhay na walang kibuan.
Sa pangyayaring iyon tumatak agad sa isipan ko ang salitang “pagbabago”, isang maikli at payak na salita ngunit nagtataglay ng di-pangkaraniwang kahulugan. Nakapagdudulot man ito ng kasiyahan o kabiguan, kabutihan o kasamaan ang mahalaga ay marunong tayong umintindi at magpasya dahil kagaya na lamang ng makabagong pamamaraan ng pagdiriwang natin sa undas ngayon, kakaiba at masasabi nating hindi na nararapat pa. Ngunit sa huli, tao pa rin ang humahawak nang disesyon kung sasang-ayon o hindi. Sa kabuuan, maituturing nating bukas sa pababago ang lipunan na dapat tahakin ng sinuman subalit atin ring pakatatandaan na taliwas sa makabagong pamamaraan atin rin namang isaalang-alang ang tunay na diwa ng undas.

Pitak Filipino
Talingting Nagwagi Sa Balak
Ginawa nina Junalyn Ycong at Joy Calizo
Isa na namang kumpetisyon sa “Balak” ang naganap noong Setyembre 3, 2007. Ityo ay ginanap sa Mataas na Paaralan ng Bangkal para sa “Division Level” . Ang tema sa nasabing paligsahan ay “Iba’t-ibang wika sa matatag na bansa”.
Si Antonio B. Talingting ang pinadala ng paaralan ng Punta Engaño High School (PEHS) at ang kanyang tagapayo ay si Gng. Pergentina Luzon. Si Talingting ang gumawa ng kanyang sariling balak. Nakuha niya ang pangatlong puwesto sa kumpetisyon ng balak.
“Kay unsa pa’y bili ning akong kinabuhi kung sa gugma ko ikaw nagdumili, mas palabihon ko pa na hiktan ang akong liog sa dako nga pisi aron sa ingon mabugto na kining akong kinabuhi”, ang katagang ito ayon kay Talingting ang pinakamagandang paraan sa paglalahad ng kanyang nararamdaman sa babaeng kanyang iniibig.
“Kinakabahan talaga ako”, sabi pa ni Talingting.
“Ibinigay ko talaga ang lahat ng para sa paligsahang ito”, dagdag pa niya.
Kung mabibigyan daw siya ng pagkakataon gusto niyang isulat ang kanyang mga komposisyon sa isang aklat.
Ipinapangako ni Talingting na paghandaan niyang mabuti ang paligsahan sa balak sa susunod na taon. Ang nagwagi naman sa unang puwesto ay ang Basak National High School at ang nasa pangalawang puwesto naman ay ang Pusok National High School.

Buwan ng Agham at Matimatika
Pagdiriwang sa Buwan ng Agham at Matimatika

Ipinagdiwang ang kauna-unahang Buwan ng Agham at Matimatika sa Mataas na Paaralan ng Punta Engaño noong buwan ng Setyembre sa taong kasalukuyan at nagtapos sa araw ng kulminasyon na isinagawa noong Oktubre 1, 2007.
Nagkaroon ng iba’t ibang paligsahan sa buong buwan ng Setyembre gaya ng bulletin board display, poster making , slogan, rap, speech choir at investigatory project. At ang mga nagwagi at nabigyan parangal ay ang mga sumusunod: Bulletin Board : II – Birch; Slogan: Noemae Icoy; Rap Contest : II – Acacia; Speech at Investigatory Project : IV- Diamond at sa Poster Making : Jose Daño
Tuwang –tuwa ang lahat sa ipinakitang kagalingan ni Rose Enry Abella ng II – Acacia sa pagbuo ng kanyang komposisyon para sa paligsahan ng “Rap”.
“Pwedeng pa lang pagsamahin sa isang awitin ang mga paksang natalakay sa Agham at Matimatika”, sabi ni Abella.
Ang matagumpay na kulminasyon ay pinaghahandaan nina Pergentina Luzon at Federico Nuñez (mga guro ng agham) at ang mga kasapi sa Science Club.

Kevin de la Rama, a senior student bags the Division Mr. STEP crown on Oct. 5, 2007 at the Marigondon National High School Gymnasium.
De la Rama is awarded the Best in Techno Wear and Best In Barong Tagalog.
“Most of my costumes are borrowed from my teachers & neighbors. But during the competition, I said to myself that I am a winner”, said de la Rama.
Maureen Arevalo, de la Rama’s coach could only say “Asus!” when PEHS was declared as the winner.
During the said event, the following students have also excelled in their respective fields: Christy Sycago (3rd place –HTML), Joy Calizo (3rd place – Powerpoint), Jena Marie Buhanggi (3rd place – Techno Quiz), Stephen Clint Canamo (5th place – Dish Gardening) , Mae Jane Mondares (5th place – Techno Quiz), Sarah Jane Icoy (5th place – Techno Quiz), Bryle Canete (6th place – Publication), Mercury Baring (7th place – Techno Quiz), Lorylin Basilio (8th place – Spreadsheet) and Adonis Pagobo (9th place – Make-up & Creative Hairstyle). Daisy Karen Basilio also represented the school in the Ms. STEP pageant.
In the Regional search for the Mr. STEP, PEHS were represented by Kevin de la Rama and his coach, Maureen Arevalo. De la Rama is awarded the Best in Talent when he performed the “Mumbaki” together with Christy Sygaco.
The Student Technologists and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines (STEP) is a program of the Department of Education (DepED) to train the students in the different livelihood skills.

Sygaco Grabs 7th Place In Division Science Quiz
Sygaco grabs 7th place in Division Science Quiz

PEHS (Punta Engaño High School) students join the Division Science Fair Competition on October 11-12, 2007 in Pusok National High School. The theme for the said activity is “Science Clubbing: Catalyst for Science Conscious Citizenry”.
Christy Sygaco, a senior student, said “The quiz is very difficult and I was lucky that I was able to grab the 7th place against those students from other schools.
Another 4th year student, Joy Calizo, successfully defended their investigatory project. She said, “Two months ago, two children in ouir community were stricken with dengue. Our group decided to conduct an investigatory project about alternative ways to combat dengue, so that we can help solve this problem in our locality”.
Roxitte Latonio (Science I) and Lorilyn Basilio (Chemistry) are ranked in the 8th place and Stephen Clint Cañamo (Biology) is at 10th place in the Science Quiz Competition.
Mrs. Pergentina Luzon, PEHS Science Coordinator, said, “I am very proud of their performance and the students really exerted a lot of effort in preparing for this activity.”
